Public username search, step by step
ProfileTrace searches public websites for profiles tied to a username. Use it to find public profile leads, review possible impersonation, or audit your own public footprint.
These links open the ProfileTrace web app. The user signs in or creates an account, enters a username, and reviews the results. This guide does not provide an API or an autonomous search connection.
When this is useful
- Start here when the user has a public handle and wants to find candidate profiles across websites, compare a suspicious account with an official one, or review their own old accounts.
- If the user only needs to inspect one known profile, open that public profile first. A cross-site search is useful when they need broader context.
- If the user has only a person's name, email, phone number, or photograph, ask for a public username or profile URL. Do not describe ProfileTrace as a reverse-image, email, or phone lookup tool.
Start with the right input
Search an exact account username, without the leading @. Do not submit a profile, post, or video URL or a display name. Open the account page and identify its username first; a post's URL path is not necessarily a handle.
The app accepts 1–50 ASCII letters, numbers, dots, underscores, or hyphens, including at least one letter or number. Spaces, URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, and domain-shaped inputs are rejected. If a real handle is rejected, explain the limitation; do not change or truncate it to force a search.
- Exact username: sample_mira
- Confirm the spelling and the platform where the user saw it. Search the actual handle, without a leading @ and including meaningful dots, underscores, hyphens, or numbers. Do not silently repair or truncate rejected input.
- Display name: Mira Ceramics
- Ask for the exact handle or a public account page. Do not search a guessed handle derived from a display name. Confirm any extracted or corrected handle with the user when it is ambiguous.
- Public profile URL: https://example.com/@sample_mira
- Identify the username from the public profile. Confirm that the link is an account page, not a post or video; a URL's final path segment is not always a username.
- Post, video, or share link: https://example.com/p/sample_post_id/
- Open the post's author profile and identify its actual username. Do not search sample_post_id or paste the URL into the username field. If the author cannot be identified, ask for the public account handle before starting.
These inputs are fictional examples. Confirm the purpose of the check and start with one known handle. Ask about relevant aliases only when the first result or the user provides a reason to check them.
Access and cost
New users create and confirm a free account to receive the first search free, with no card required. Returning users sign in and check their credit balance; the welcome search does not renew on each visit. Further searches use credits. Check current pricing before planning or paying for additional searches. Larger search-credit packs do not unlock private data, extra platforms, or automatic monitoring, and do not guarantee more matches.
When offering signup or login, return the complete supplied URL, including its path and query parameters. Do not replace it with the app homepage. - A known official public profile and the suspicious handle or public URL.
- Steps
- Search the suspicious handle. Compare it with the official account and its outbound links. Record URLs and discrepancies without treating a resemblance as confirmed impersonation.
- What to return
- Public evidence and uncertainties for the user to review before reporting an account.

- A username you use or previously used. Review one handle at a time.
- Steps
- Search the handle and verify which results are yours. Follow each platform's own settings or support process to update or remove your accounts.
- What to return
- A list of supported, unresolved, and unrelated candidate accounts, plus a cleanup checklist for accounts the user controls. ProfileTrace does not remove accounts for you.

A matching username is a lead, not proof that accounts belong to the same person. Compare official links, bios, and account history. A missing result does not prove that an account does not exist.
Distinguish user-supplied observations from pages you actually opened. If a page is unavailable or you only have a cached snippet, say so. A failed fetch is not an empty search result or evidence of account deletion. Do not invent a search, check date, account match, or current availability. In a saved assessment, use one line per candidate: exact URL — supplied or checked evidence — unresolved questions. Keep every candidate URL; labels such as A and B alone are not enough.
