Use ProfileTrace when you have a username and want to review public profile matches and document suspected impersonation. Consider Social Catfish when you also need its other advertised lookup inputs, such as an email, phone number or image. The choice depends on the information you have and the results you need to inspect.

This comparison is written by ProfileTrace. We checked the providers’ public pages on November 3, 2026; we have not run a head-to-head accuracy or speed test.

What are you trying to find?

ProfileTrace’s username search checks supported public sites for profiles using a handle. You open candidate accounts and compare what they publish. It does not search private messages or subscriber-only content.

Social Catfish offers a reverse username search. Its main site also advertises name, email, phone, address and image lookups. Those additional inputs may be useful when a handle is all you have tried so far. They are different search types, so check what your selected plan includes.

What is free, and what costs money?

ProfileTrace offers a free first search, then prepaid credits for additional searches. Its pricing page lists the current packs; they do not automatically renew.

Social Catfish says you can begin a search and preview potential matches for free, while full reports and deeper results may require payment. Its published terms describe monthly and quarterly memberships. Before buying, read the checkout’s current total, billing interval and cancellation conditions.

How do I review a possible impersonator?

A search can bring accounts into view. The next task is to connect each one to a source you already trust, then record the specific concern.

For example, imagine your own website links to one social profile, and a username search returns a second account using the same handle and picture. This is an illustrative example, not a tested result from either service.

  1. Open the candidate’s public profile URL. Read its bio, outbound links and relevant posts rather than relying on a search preview alone.
  2. Check whether your known website or established account links to that candidate. A link from the candidate back to your site can be copied, so record the direction of the link.
  3. Save the candidate URL, the time you checked it, a screenshot of the disputed claim and the known source you compared it with. Separate what you observed from what remains unresolved before making a platform report.

The cross-platform creator guide explains how to compare public links and conflicting details. This is a self-guided review, not an analyst’s determination that an account is fake.

What can these results establish?

Results are leads, not proof of identity. ProfileTrace is not a background check and cannot be used for hiring, housing, credit or insurance decisions under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

If a public username search fits your task, start with the handle you already know and inspect the accounts it returns.
