ProfileTrace vs WhatsMyName: Which username search should I use?
WhatsMyName is a good starting point if you want a free browser-based username search with documented category filters and CSV or PDF exports. ProfileTrace is an alternative if you prefer public-profile results with evidence-saving guidance and official help links where available, paid for with prepaid credits after a free first search. You don’t need command-line experience for either browser option.
This comparison is published by ProfileTrace. Documentation checked November 4, 2026; we have not benchmarked the tools or independently tested the current WhatsMyName web interface.
WhatsMyName is a dataset as well as a name on a website
The WhatsMyName project maintains rules for checking whether a username exists on public websites. A separate tool reads those rules and performs the checks. That distinction matters: two tools can use the same dataset and still have different controls, presentation and export options.
The project points readers to whatsmyname.app, the free web interface from OSINT Combine. The project’s README lists category filters and CSV/PDF export for that interface. The repository is also the place to find acknowledged implementations; a similar product name alone doesn’t establish an affiliation.
Developers who want to inspect or reuse the check definitions should start with the repository. For an ordinary handle lookup, use the linked browser tool.
An export is a useful starting record
For a review you may revisit later, save more than the names of the sites that returned a match. Keep the date, exact handle and candidate URLs. Then open the accounts that matter to your question and record what you actually saw. A downloaded result file records a search; it doesn’t establish who owns the accounts inside it.
Suppose you’re checking whether two creator profiles belong together. An established website that links to both is a better connection than a matching avatar that either account could copy. Our cross-platform creator guide explains that link check without treating every reused handle as one person.
Where ProfileTrace fits
ProfileTrace puts public username search and next-step guidance in the same results view: save the evidence, then use official reporting or account-help pages where a relevant guide is available. The review and any report remain yours to complete.
Its free first search lets you judge that presentation before buying credits. There is no subscription or automatic renewal. If WhatsMyName’s free search and exports already give you what you need, you may have no reason to pay for another lookup. If you want a scriptable search instead of either browser workflow, the Sherlock comparison addresses that different choice.
Results are leads, not proof of identity. ProfileTrace is not a background check and cannot be used for hiring, housing, credit or insurance decisions under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
