About Pokemon Showdown profiles

How Pokemon Showdown usernames work

Showdown turns every name into a user ID by lowercasing it and dropping spaces and symbols, so Ash Ketchum 99 and ashketchum99 are the same account, with its page at pokemonshowdown.com/users/ashketchum99. Names must contain at least one letter, and the ID can be at most 18 characters.

Typical profile URL: https://pokemonshowdown.com/users/<handle>

Tips for finding accounts

The Find a user box is at pokemonshowdown.com/users/. Ladder pages list the top 500 players with profile links; replay.pokemonshowdown.com has username search for public battles.

Profile visibility

Anyone can play under an unregistered name, and the rules let players switch names at any time by logging in with another one, so a name in a battle is not proof of who was playing. User pages show only a join date and ladder ratings, private replays never appear in search, and alt-account details in /whois are visible only to Showdown staff.

More about Pokemon Showdown

What this service is

Pokemon Showdown is a browser-based Pokemon battle simulator with ranked ladders for each format. Its user pages have no bio or friend list: a player's public record is the registration date, ratings on the official ladders, the replays they chose to save publicly, and what they say in public chat rooms.

Username and URL behavior

Registering a name from the settings gear protects it with a password; unregistered names can be used by anyone who types them. Showdown's rules let players change names at any time by logging out and back in under another name, and forbid names that impersonate staff or famous people and organisations that use Showdown or are associated with Pokemon.

Links and account details

The /users/ page shows the join date and, for each rated format, Elo, GXE, and Glicko-1. Ladder pages show the top 500, public replays show dates, formats, and opponents, and staff carry a %, @, #, or ~ symbol next to their name in chat. A long-registered account with ratings in the formats a player is known for is the strongest public sign.

Common impersonation pattern

A display name on Showdown is just the user ID with capitals and spaces added, so a copycat that changes one letter or digit can look identical in chat. The rules specifically ban names that copy staff or well-known people and organisations. Compare the user ID, registration status, and join date rather than how the name is styled.

How to report a concern

Type /report in the client to open a help ticket, and have the battle link or replay ready for anything that happened in a battle, because staff say they cannot help without it. For problems in a chat room, /roomauth lists that room's staff. Both routes are described in the Pokemon Showdown FAQ.

Pokemon Showdown Verification Checklist

Check the profile

  • Convert the name to its user ID (lowercase, no spaces or symbols) before opening the /users/ page.
  • Check whether the page says Unregistered. If it does, anyone could have used that name.
  • Note the join date and which formats show ratings.
  • Save the battle link or replay ID for the game you are asking about.

What to do with the results

  • Record the user ID, not the styled display name, alongside the date you checked.
  • Save the replay links that tie the player to specific battles.
  • Screenshot the /users/ page, because ratings move after every ladder game.
  • If the player links a Showdown name on another site, keep that page as supporting evidence.
  • ProfileTrace can show where the same name appears on ~4,000 sites. On Showdown that matters more than usual, because the name alone proves little; a match elsewhere helps only if that page points back to this user ID.

Checks and reporting on Pokemon Showdown

Signs of a copied account

  • Someone claims an established account, but the /users/ page says Unregistered.
  • A name one character away from a known player, or styled to look like staff.
  • Rating or tournament claims that neither the /users/ page nor public replays support.
  • Chat from a name that only recently appeared, used to vouch for trades, teams, or tournament results.

Check the account

  • Search replay.pokemonshowdown.com by username and compare formats, teams, and dates with the games you know about.
  • Run /rank followed by the name in the client and compare it with the ratings on the /users/ page.
  • Run /whois followed by the name while the user is online to see their global group and public rooms.
  • If a player names their Showdown account elsewhere, check that the user ID matches exactly, since capitals and spaces are ignored.

Report a copied account

  1. Copy the user ID and the battle URL or replay link.
  2. Type /report in the client to open a help ticket, as the Showdown FAQ describes.
  3. For a room problem, use /roomauth to find that room's staff.
  4. Check a suspicious name against the Showdown username rules before reporting it as impersonation.
