How Wikipedia usernames work

A Wikipedia username is a global Wikimedia account. Registering it on any public Wikimedia wiki reserves the same name on every other one, so the account behind a name on English Wikipedia is the same account on Wikipedia in other languages and on the sister projects, and a local account is created the first time that user visits another wiki. The pattern above is the Special:CentralAuth page for the global account. The everyday public addresses are en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Name for the user page and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Name for the edit log.

Tips for finding accounts

MediaWiki capitalizes the first letter and treats underscores as spaces, so john_smith and John smith point to the same account.

Profile visibility

Wikipedia only shows what an account did on the wikis. Email addresses, IP addresses of registered users and deleted edits are not public, and names shaped like ~2026-12345-67 are temporary accounts for logged-out editors, not chosen usernames. What this service is

Wikipedia is the volunteer-written encyclopedia hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, and every edit is attributed to a username or, for logged-out editors, a temporary account. English Wikipedia introduced temporary accounts on November 4, 2025, so recent logged-out edits carry generated names instead of IP addresses. For a username search this means one rule: a real username was chosen by a person, and its public record is the edit history.

Username and URL behavior

Names cannot contain # < > [ ] | { } / @ : or =, and MediaWiki refuses a new name that is already taken or too similar to an existing account. Renames are handled by Wikimedia's global renamers through Special:GlobalRenameRequest, which requires signing in. After a rename, past edits show the new name in page histories, logs and contribution lists, but old talk-page signatures keep the previous name unless someone edits them. Links and account details

Special:Contributions lists every edit with its date, page and diff, and Wikipedia's own help page reminds editors that anyone can view any contributions page. CentralAuth adds the wikis the global account is attached to. The user page is written by the account itself, so treat its biography, job title or affiliation as a claim to check, not as verification.

Common impersonation pattern

The recurring Wikipedia risk is outreach from someone claiming to be an editor or administrator who will create, approve or protect an article for a fee. Wikipedia's scam warning says help from real volunteers is always free and never asks for money. On-wiki, a username that implies a notable living person can be blocked until its owner proves who they are.

How to report a concern

Forward paid-editing scam emails, with full headers, to paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org as described on Wikipedia's scam warning. Check the profile

Open Special:CentralAuth for the exact name and note which wikis the global account is attached to.
Read Special:Contributions on the wiki where you expect activity, and check the dates and topics of the edits.
Compare the user page claims with the edit history: does the account actually edit the subjects it says it knows?
Rule out temporary accounts (names beginning with ~ and a year) before treating a name as someone's chosen handle.

What to do with the results

Record the exact username, the CentralAuth URL and the date you checked.
Keep links to specific diffs rather than screenshots of a page that may change.
Run the username through ProfileTrace to see which other public sites carry the same handle, then compare those profiles with the edit history.
Recheck later: a rename moves the edit history to a new name.

Checks and reporting on Wikipedia

Signs of a copied account

Emails or messages offering paid article creation, draft approval or deletion protection.
A sender claiming administrator status whose claimed username has little or no edit history.
Usernames that echo a company, celebrity or Wikimedia role with no supporting edit record.
Requests to move the conversation to payment or messaging apps.

Check the account

Look for a statement on the user page that links to an off-wiki profile, and a matching link back from that profile to the Wikipedia account.
Check whether the account was renamed: old talk-page signatures under a different name can reveal an earlier username.
Treat an account that claims to be a famous person with caution; Wikipedia policy lets administrators block such names until identity is confirmed through info-en@wikimedia.org.
Remember that one person may not share an account with others under Wikipedia policy, but a username alone still does not prove who is typing.

Report a copied account

Save the message, the full email headers and the username the sender claimed.
Check the claimed account's CentralAuth and contributions pages and screenshot what you find.
